Joyce (aka Flowerovlove) talks new music and the songwriting process
Tell us about yourself!
Hi I’m Joyce (aka, Flowerovlove)! I’m 15, and I make alternative/indie music. I’ve been into music ever since I was born, but started recording 3 years ago-only releasing now, of course.
How has quarantine impacted your songwriting or creativity in general?
Getting inspiration never fades for me, even in quarantine. It’s given me time to reflect and see life from a different point of view.
Who do you draw (fashion) inspiration from, and what are some stores you'd recommend for those who'd like to dress similarly?
I get fashion inspiration from people in London-- the coolest outfits to look out for are actually on older people. I can say that people who are about 50- to 60-years-old have the best style. I also live for the 80s style and get that inspo from Nelson (the first ever vlogger). Ever since, he’s honestly been my fashion father. I’d recommend thrifting and charity shops, but be very lenient with your money because you can always get good clothes for cheap. I literally have a whole Chanel type outfit for £2.
What is your songwriting process?
My song writing process is to have a storyline and write from what I want the story to be. For example, my song ‘Unseen Miracles’ is about enjoying your own company and not needing friends to have a good time-- to live for yourself and calm your mind, meditation is 200% key. And the lyrics project that.
What was your inspiration for Kiss & Chase?
My inspiration for “Kiss & Chase” was yet again another storyline similar to “Unseen Miracles,” though “Kiss & Chase” mainly focuses on the Meditation aspect of life and being very sure of yourself. Just finally finding what feels good for you. It sounds like a love song, but I’ve never experienced “love” so I guess the lovey parts are from watching movies. I really love the movie “Can’t Buy Me Love” . You should watch it. It’s so fab.
Do you ever feel pressure from fans to create more music?
I never feel pressured by anything or anyone. I love music and enjoy making it! For me, fun doesn’t equal pressure. Either way, getting messages like ‘we want more’ is the best thing ever because I want to make music that people can live into. I say that a lot and will continue to.
Do you ever feel that your young age holds you back from opportunities/people don't take you seriously because of it?
I definitely don’t feel like being 15-years-old holds me back. In fact, it puts me at an advantage: people always say to me, ‘At 15, I didn’t know what I wanted in life,’ so being younger makes everything you do 10x cooler.
What are some of your favorite musicians?
My favourite musicians hmm Blondie, Boy Pablo, and my brother Wilfred these artists put a lot of work into what they do and are very passionate about it and I adore that and their music I can live into.
How do you balance school and music?
Well there’s 24hrs in a day half of that we sleep which is very mandatory, school is for 6 hours then you have the rest of your day so if something music in this case is a priority to you then you will make time and get it done.
What was your inspiration for Fat Wave?
Fat Wave is inspired by the struggle to find yourself as a growing teen. Growing up can be so confusing and scary you experience so many emotions not knowing why. Fat wave is a story it’s metaphoric for ‘love’ but the actuality of it is your mind being an orphan to your body. At the end of the song you realise you’ve found yourself and that’s all you need. Like a warm hug. The range of instruments in the song is inspired by the culture set in London and by Incorporating that it adds a new tone to my sound.
